Cades Cove receives lots of visitors every day, as it is the most popular area of the Smokies. The National Park Service is taking action to ensure that everyone has a safe and fun visit. They have enacted vehicle-free days in Cades Cove, which take place every Wednesday during the summer. Let us tell you more about why we love this time of year with some benefits of the Vehicle-Free Wednesdays in Cades Cove:

1. You Don’t Have To Worry About Cars

One benefit of Cades Cove vehicle-free days is that no cars are permitted on the loop road. It is a great time for activities like biking the 11-mile scenic loop. You can bring your own or rent one for the day! Visitors also have the option to walk the scenic route as well. Even though there are no cars to look out for, it is still important to share the road. Cyclists should avoid biking too fast and be mindful of people on foot. People walking should stay to one side so that the bikes have room to pass by. Everyone needs the chance to see all the beauty that the area has to offer.

2. Faster Way to Get Around

When you don’t have to worry about car traffic in Cades Cove, you can get around the area much faster. It is also nice not to worry about parking the car every time you want to see something up close. Notable stops to explore include the John Oliver Cabin. This is the oldest human structure in the park. It was built by the cabin’s namesake and his wife when they moved to the area. Additionally, you should also explore the churches along the loop. These structures were important to the thriving settlement because they satisfied the community’s religious and social needs. The inside of the churches still looks authentic, as they have rows of wooden pews with a preacher’s stand at the front.

3. Great Group Activity

Taking advantage of the vehicle-free Wednesdays in Cades Cove is a great group activity. It is a low-cost way to spend time together while enjoying the outdoors. Your group can enjoy biking or walking as you admire the natural beauty. Reminisce on old memories while making new ones. Be sure to bring your camera because it is a great backdrop for photos. Here are a couple more things to keep in mind when visiting the area:

  • Parking is Limited: Parking on Vehicle-Free Wednesdays can fill up quickly, so make sure you arrive early to get a spot. If parking areas are full, you can always come back later. Another advantage of coming early? You can be out in the cooler weather!
  • You Need a Parking Tag: When you park your vehicle, you’ll still need to have a Smoky Mountain parking tag! You can purchase one online or at one of the kiosks located around the national park.
