Directions to Trailhead
How do you get to the trailhead for the Russell Field Trail? Start at the Cades Cove Picnic Area and hike for 1.6 miles on the Anthony Creek Trail until you reach the junction. The Russell Field Trail itself is 5 miles one-way. Parking is limited, so you should arrive early to get a good spot. You should also have a Smoky Mountain parking pass on your vehicle before beginning the hike.
Trail Description
While Russell Field Trail is only 5 miles long, it is strenuous due to the terrain. It follows the Left Prong of Anthony Creek and climbs Leadbetter Ridge to the trail’s namesake. You’ll find Backcountry Campsite #10 near the beginning of the trail. The route follows through one of the last old-growth forests on the west end of the national park. Look up into the tall rhododendron and hemlock trees to see if you can spot any birds. There are over 240 documented species of birds in the park. Listen closely to hear their distinctive sounds.

The Russell Field Trail ends at its namesake. It is a large area of land that was a popular spot for grazing animals before the park was established. Russell Field is home to the Russell Field Shelter, which is a part of the over 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail. Even if you’re not camping, the shelter is a great place to stop and rest before heading back. You can enjoy a delicious picnic while looking out at the views. Take some pictures to make the memories last forever.
Important Tip: If you do plan on camping here, you will need a reservation and permit! Backcountry camping areas are only open in the warmer months.
