Go on a Hike

Fall colors peak in late October/earlyNovember, and often stick around for the first week or so of November. This means you’ll still get the last glimpses of autumn leaves. With so many options, it is easy to choose the perfect hike! We love the Cades Cove Nature Trail because of its short distance and mild terrain!

Looking for something a little longer? Consider the Rich Mountain Loop Trail. The hike is 8.5 miles roundtrip and goes through a dense forest with lots of trees. When hiking, you’ll want to wear long pants with a jacket you can put on and take off. While the mornings may be chilly, the temperatures may warm up when the sun comes out.

Drive the 11-Mile Loop

Another great thing to do in Cades Cove in November is drive on the loop road. This is a popular route with a little bit of everything. Look up into the trees to get a glimpse of the branches overhead with fall leaves. As for animals, you have a good chance of seeing a white-tailed deer. This is because their breeding season takes place in the fall. Take a close look at the open fields to catch them wandering around.

Cades Cove Loop Road also provides access to many cool historical buildings, offering a unique view of what living in the area was like before it became the national park attraction we all know and love. One of them is the John Oliver Cabin, the oldest human structure in the whole national park. Visitors can also peek inside three historic churches. Take a few moments of quiet reflection in the pews, or sing your favorite hymn!

Visit the John Cable Mill

If you like the historical structures along Cades Cove Loop Road, you won’t want to miss the John Cable Mill, located next to the Cades Cove Visitor Center. The mill was built in 1867, and while it has received improvements, the gristmill remains authentic and is the only one left standing in the Smokies.

Fun Fact: The Cable Mill is operational every day from early March through the end of October. You’ll be happy to know that you still have a chance to see it in operation Fridays through Sundays in November.
