Cades Cove is one of the most popular places in the Smokies, but you might be surprised to learn that November is one of the least popular times to visit! With the leaves starting to fall and the temperatures starting to drop, you might not consider this time of year to be a nice time to visit, but there is still so much to see and do! Here are a few reasons why you should visit Cades Cove in November:
1. Last Glimpses of Fall Foliage
Whether you simply drive the scenic loop road or go hiking, you’ll have the chance to see the last glimpses of fall foliage if you visit Cades Cove in November. The colors typically peak in late October to early November before the leaves fall off the trees. A few routes we recommend include:

- Abrams Falls Trail: moderate trail leads to a stunning 20-foot waterfall
- Cades Cove Nature Trail: short forest trail, great for kids
- Wet Bottom Trail: easy 1-mile walk near the Elijah Oliver cabin
- Gregory Bald: longer trek to mountaintop meadow, tremendous views
If you hike later in the day, be mindful of the daylight. When the clocks fall back, it gets darker an hour earlier. It is never a good idea to hike in the dark, no matter your level of hiking expertise.
2. Last Chance for Horseback Riding and Carriage Rides
Some of the seasonal activities in Cades Cove include horseback riding and carriage rides. The Cades Cove Riding Stables close in late November and won’t open again until March. When they are open, visitors can take guided tours of the area on horseback. All skill levels are welcome. The staff will teach you the basics. The horses themselves are chosen for their willingness to please.
The stables also offer carriage rides, another unique way to get around the area. Before there were cars, settlers used carriages as a more efficient way to get places. The horses don’t go as fast as a vehicle, so you can get a better look at things.
3. Cooler Weather Without Road Closures

While November is certainly chilly in the Smokies, there is typically a smaller chance of snow and ice. Some areas of Cades Cove may close temporarily due to sudden icy conditions, but you typically won’t have to worry about these park closures until later in the winter season. You will love the milder weather and frost-covered meadows, but be sure to dress warmly, especially if you venture out of your vehicle to explore or hike.
4. Beat the Holiday Rush
An additional advantage of visiting Cades Cove in November is that you beat the holiday rush. People love to visit around Christmas time because they may have more time off work or school. By visiting in early to mid-November, you’ll find the national park a little less crowded. Take this opportunity to go look into the many historical churches and buildings around Cades Cove or one of the many scenic hiking trails.
November in Cades Cove is the perfect time to plan a trip! But if you can’t make it during the holiday season, you still have the entire winter to come and experience the quiet beauty of this Smoky Mountain valley. Read up on what to expect when you visit Cades Cove in the winter!
