We’ve made lists of things to do when you’re at Cades Cove, including the best seasonal activities and even what NOT to do, but what about being prepared for your trip to this popular area in Great Smoky Mountains National Park? Whether you make a mental checklist or are simply in the beginning stages of planning your vacation, here are a few things you should do before visiting Cades Cove:

1. Make Sure You Have a Parking Pass

When parking your vehicle around Cades Cove for more than 15 minutes, you need to have a parking pass. They are affordable and can be purchased online or in the park. If you buy one online, remember to print it out before you leave. Consequences for not having a parking pass include a warning, citation, or even your vehicle being towed at your expense. Remember that the purchase of a parking pass does not guarantee a parking spot. It is a good idea to arrive at the park early in order to have the best chance of getting a space.

2. Check the Weather

After securing a parking tag, you should also make sure to check the weather in Cades Cove for the day of your visit. In the summer, temperatures can reach the 90s in lower elevations. Winter temperatures can have highs in the 50s or drop below freezing. The temperature in higher elevations like Gregory Bald can be as much as 20 degrees cooler. The weather will determine what you wear when you come to the park. It could be shorts and a t-shirt or layers. Inclement weather, such as snow or rain, could cause some areas to temporarily close due to flooding or ice. 3. Read About Hiking Trails

The Cades Cove Nature Trail is ideal for beginners. Visitors can access the route from Cades Cove Loop Road. It is 2 miles roundtrip and the terrain is flat. One of the highlights is a creek crossing; be sure to use the handrail as you cross to keep your balance.

A longer, more strenuous hike is the Abrams Falls Trail. It is 5 miles roundtrip, and the terrain can be rocky at some points. All the hard work will get you to the namesake. Abrams Falls is a 20-foot waterfall with a deep pool at the bottom. Swimming here is prohibited due to the strong undertow, but it is still fun to peer into the water to see fish and salamanders. No matter what trail you choose, enjoy the fresh air and picturesque views. You may even see some wildlife. Cades Cove is a popular home for black bears, deer, and wild turkeys.
