We can help you narrow down the list to essentials! You don’t want to be carrying a heavy bag while exploring the area, so keep reading to find out what you’ll need! Here is a list of 4 things to bring on a day trip to Cades Cove:
1. Quality Shoes

If you’re going to be outdoors exploring Cades Cove, you’ll need some quality shoes. The type will depend on where you choose to go! If you’re hiking the Cades Cove Nature Trail or a similar easy hike, tennis shoes are suitable! Plan to venture into higher elevations or rocky terrain? You may want to consider a pair of hiking boots. They’ll have better traction to help you maintain your balance.
Some of our recommendations for longer, more challenging hikes include the Rich Mountain Trail, Spence Field, or Gregory Bald!
2. Reusable Water Bottle and Snacks
Along with quality shoes, adequate hydration will keep you going throughout your day in Cades Cove. This is true for all seasons, even winter! Your list of essentials should include a reusable water bottle. The size will depend on how long you plan to be out for! You can fill it up at the trailheads, Cades Cove Visitor Center, or Cades Cove Campground! Refrain from consuming any water in the streams and rivers, as it is not safe to drink. Using plastic water bottles? Don’t leave them behind. Follow the Leave No Trace guidelines and keep the area exactly as you found it.
Another way to keep your energy up while in Cades Cove is by eating a good meal. Pack some snacks to have on-the-go as well! Good options include trail mix, nuts, fruit, or crackers! Keep any food concealed when not eating to avoid attracting wildlife!
3. Camera/Battery Pack

Cades Cove is a great place for photography. You can use your cell phone or a standalone camera to snap some pictures of the scenery. Be sure to pack a charged battery pack for your phone! Capture the little details on the spring wildflowers or the vibrant pattern on the fall foliage. As for winter, you could find a cool icicle on a tree. Look closely, and you may be lucky enough to capture an action shot of the wildlife, such as black bears and deer. Use the “Zoom” function and keep a distance of 150 feet or more from any animals you see. The scenery is also an excellent backdrop for photos with loved ones. Pictures are a way to make the memories of your days in Cades Cove last forever!
4. Sun Protection and Insect Spray
No matter what season it is, visitors to Cades Cove should have adequate sun protection. The hottest part of the day is typically between 10 am and 2 pm. Rub some sunscreen on your face and neck. Wear a hat and sunglasses to keep the light out of your eyes. Stay in the shade of leaves when you can. In addition to the light and heat, you should also keep the insects away. Spray insect repellent on exposed parts of your body to minimize bites.
